The "Design View" shows an embroidery file either in "View" or in "Edit"1 mode, depending on the file's format. On iPads or iPhones Plus (landscape) this view can be used together with the gallery or in full-screen mode. You can use the following gestures in this view:

Here is an overview of all top-level actions available in this view. Some operations can be performed by gestures, only. Their corresponding menu items will display a hint about the appropriate gestures as mentioned above.

Frequently Asked Questions

In this section you find solutions for some common problems. If your question is not answered, do no hesitate to contact me by mail: Hopefully I can offer some assistance, and as this help is updated frequently, your problem might even make it into this section to help other users.

How to import designs?

"How can I transfer designs from my computer?"

Currenly three methods are supported to import designs into StitchBuddy iOS:

  1. Using "iTunes File Sharing":
Connect your iPad / iPhone to your computer via USB cable or WiFi, and open iTunes. Now scroll down at the "Applications" tab of the iPad. Select "StitchBuddy iOS" and add design files (not folders) to the document list on the right using drag and drop or the appropriate button.
  2. Synchronize via iCloud:
You can link StitchBuddy to your iCloud, and it will sync all embroidery files and subfolders in its application folder. This way it is easy to share designs between different devices (including your Mac / PC).
  3. Using the "Open with" function:
Navigate to an embroidery file in another app of your iPad, e. g. an attachment in Mail or a downloadable file in Safari. Tap on the design's icon, and select "StitchBuddy iOS" when you are asked for an application to open the file with. The design will be copied to StitchBuddy iOS's gallery, and opened immediately.

How to export / share designs?

"How can I transfer modified designs to my computer?"

StitchBuddy iOS can not communicate with an embroidery machine, so you need to transfer designs to your computer, first: As mentioned above, "iTunes File Sharing" or iCloud can be used to copy files from the iOS application. Additionally you can tap on the design in the "Gallery View" and select "Email (Design)" from the "Share" menu to send a file as an email attachment.

How to modify a design which format is not writable?

StitchBuddy iOS can only write a subset of all supported file formats, currently JEF, PES v1.0, PEC, DST, EXP, and PCS. If a file format can not be written, no modifications can be applied to this design (it is opened in "view mode").

In this case you can switch to the "Gallery View", convert the design into a writable format, and open the converted file in "Edit" mode.

How to improve the display performance?

"Sometime the display of designs lags behind actions like selection, zooming, scrolling."

The computer power needed to display embroidery designs with several thousands of stitches puts an iPad to its limit. To optimize the workload new content is updated in tiles with some delay after the operation. I recommend to disable the 3D effects in the view options of the "Design View" to improve the display performance, especially on older iPads.

How to change print options?

"I want to change the printout of a design, e. g showing the design's center, hiding jump stitches, or without 3D effects."

Printouts are using the same options as the "Design View". Just open any design, select the menu item to open the view options, and set the options accordingly.

Do I need an internet connection?

"Can I use StitchBuddy iOS without an internet connection? Does StitchBuddy iOS transfer any data?"

You can use the app without any network connection. If you have enabled iCLoud synching, StitchBuddy transfers modified designs in the background.

How to correct wrong previews in the gallery?

"The gallery is showing strange content (wrong preview icons, incorrect colors / language, not all files, already deleted files, ...)"

Something unexpected occurred as you should not face these problems. Please send me an email with an error description and (if possible) a screen shot. StitchBuddy iOS can be forced to recreate the gallery, just set the appropriate switch in its settings.

I can't open JPX files from Mail / Safari

"In Mail / Safari Janome JPX files are only shown as question marks, and can't be opened with StitchBuddy iOS"

Unfortunately Janome has chosen a file extension which is already reserved for another file type (JPEG 2000). As a result iOS 5.x tries to open the embroidery design as a graphic file, and fails. Although I tweaked the handling of mail attachments for iOS 6, it is recommended to connect the iPad to your computer, and use iTunes File Sharing for importing JPX designs.
